The materials science and engineering department offers bachelor’s, master’s, master of engineering, and doctorate degrees. Presently, we have about 280 undergraduates and 80 graduate students. In addition to receiving a first-rate technical education, our undergraduates receive outstanding leadership/communication skills through our Engineering Communications Program. Graduates from MSE accept positions in a wide range of industries including automotive, aerospace, and materials manufacturing. They also go to work for consulting companies and government agencies. Over 50% of our students do at least one internship. We also provide opportunities for our students to have an international experience (ranging from three weeks to a semester) in China, Germany, and Switzerland. MSE offers extensive hands-on laboratory experiences, a “family” environment, and the opportunity to participate in professional activities, including national competitions.
The diverse faculty and technical staff have combined expertise in development, manufacturing, characterization, testing, and application of ceramic, metal, polymer, composite, and microelectronic materials systems. They have worked extensively with companies ranging from aerospace and automotive to chemical and biomedical, from nuclear fuels, energy generation, and petroleum products to heavy equipment and defense industries. The quality of these individuals and the students who graduate from the program will provide the basis for future growth of MSE at Virginia Tech.
MSE has over 30,000 ft2 of space in Holden, Hancock, Randolph, Torgersen, and Whittemore Halls, as well as the Kroehling Advanced Materials Foundry located on Plantation Road.
