Engaging the world

The Engineering Communications Program team is an integral part of the Materials Science and Engineering curriculum, teaching courses, conducting workshops, tutoring students, evaluating assignments, and conducting regular programmatic assessment. The program provides instruction in written, oral, and visual communications in both traditional engineering courses and dedicated professional development courses from the sophomore through senior years.

Our team also provides communications workshops for the graduate program and collaborates with other communications programs across the university.

The program covers topics such as technical communications; business and professional communications; public speaking; ethics; diversity, inclusion, and cross-cultural communications; interpersonal and professional development skills; collaborative communications; and project management skills.

It helps fulfill the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology professional outcomes expected of undergraduates, including:

  • The ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities
  • An ability to communicate effectively
  • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  • A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • A knowledge of contemporary issues

The program is directed by Christine Burgoyne, who brings a broad range of teaching and course development experience to the program. She oversees graduate and undergraduate staff. Reach out for more information.
