Holden Hall 2.0

advisory committee in front of Holden construction
Holden Hall 2.0 opened to faculty, staff, and researchers in March 2022 and will open to students and classes in Fall 2022.

Holden Hall 2.0 opened in spring 2022 and for the first time in years put much of Materials Science and Engineering under the same roof.

With 102,000 square feet of new and renvoated space, the building boasts high-tech laboratories for materials research, new computational spaces for transdisciplinary collaboration, and three new 50-seat classrooms equipped with the latest A/V capabilities.

Particular attention has gone into the design of the new Teaching Laboratories, which not only serve an instructional function for undergraduates, but also provide research groups in materials science and other departments with access to a wide array of fundamental equipment for common use. The reimagined Holden Hall adds 75% more square footage than was previously available, including:

The Laboratory Operations Center, which will serve as the main access point for lab supervision, as well as providing audio-visual capabilities for instruction and presentation and an open demonstration space for departmental recruiting.

M.A.D.E. (Materials Active Design & Exploration) Lab. A flexible research space for MSE senior design and other long-term student projects, demonstrations, and other ad hoc instruction and research needs. There will be bench space for at least 12 projects at a time.

The Chemical Processes Laboratory will be the core facility for the department’s Corrosion Science initiative and will meet the National Strategy for Corrosion Research outlined by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

The Advanced Instrumental Analysis Suite will build on our existing Thermal Analysis Laboratory, including upgraded capabilities in calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, rheology, and dynamic mechanical analysis. A wide spectrum of new equipment will bring our facilities up to world-class level, including benchtop SEM/EDS, XRD, and acoustic microscope for structural analysis; atomic force microscope and step profilometer for surface analysis; high-temperature thermal conductivity tester; piezoelectric poling station and dielectric/optical testing for investigation of electromagnetic/electro-optic properties.
